Tentang cerita

Cerita, …, selamanya tentang manusia, kehidupannya, bukan kematiannya.

On Stories

“Stories, …, are always about mankind, our lives, not our deaths. Yes, even when they are about animals, monsters, or gods or ghosts. And there’s nothing more difficult to understand than great mankind… No, don’t underestimate little mankind, however simple they may look; be your eyes as sharp as eagles’, your thoughts as sharp as a razorblade, your touch more delicate than the gods’, your ears attuned to the music and the lamentations of life; your knowledge of mankind can never, ever be complete.”

– Pramoedya Ananta Toer, from the introduction to Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind),
Lentera Dipantara edition, 2005.
